History
Damião Conceição Vieira was born in Trancoso, on August 5th 1967. He was still a little boy when he noticed a special feeling for art. By the time he was about twelve, he began to sketch his first works: they were colored pencil and china ink drawings.
As time went on, Damião tried several other materials like gouache, pastel, charcoal, acrylic and oil paints. Many tourists, upon leaving Trancoso, left their paint supplies and took away a little painting by the young artist.
For many years, painting was just as a hobby, for Damião. He spent most of his time doing different kinds of work in order to make money to survive. He worked as waiter, carpenter and masonry assistant.
In spite of all these difficulties, Damião had a great incentive from the Trancoso’s visitors and dwellers to go on painting. In about 1985, he sold one of his little paintings. It was very important to him. From this time on, he did not stop painting anymore. And his family could see that art wasn’t a “thing for who doesn’t want to work”, but a real profession.
Nowadays, Damião dedicates himself full-time to the thing he likes most: painting.
